In the mood for a sweet snack that’s healthy, but still delicious? Try this chocolate chip mug cake! It’s perfectly rich and makes a great dessert or mid-day snack. Ready in under 10 minutes. Quick and easy makes this dessert even better.

My favorite healthy ingredients

As always, this mug cake is made using healthier ingredients than other standard recipes. It’s delicious and nutrient-rich, making it the perfect snack, breakfast, or even dessert!

First, I use coconut flour as the base of the batter to give this mug cake a little extra kick in nutrients. It has more benefits than all purpose flour and is the better choice.

For the oil, I stay away from vegetable and canola, instead opting for an applesauce substitute. Doing so allows this mug cake to benefit cholesterol, blood sugar, and more.

Finally, I use maple syrup as an all-natural sweetener in this mug cake recipe! It doesn’t include any gnarly chemicals or preservatives like so many sugars do, which makes it a great, wholesome option.

Optional recipe substitutes

If you find yourself missing an ingredient or two, you can use these suggestions as replacements!

  • Baking soda: Out of baking soda? You can actually use baking powder to replace it. You’ll need 3x the amount of powder, which for this recipe will equate to 1.5 tsp. However, I would try and stray away from this as it may be too much for the flavor of the mug cake.

  • Eggs: You can try to use applesauce or chia seeds to replace the egg in this mug cake recipe. You will need 1/4 cup of applesauce, or 1 tbsp of chia seeds. To use the seeds, mix with 3 tbsp of water, and let sit until the chia seeds have fully absorbed the liquid. Once ready, add to your batter.

  • Applesauce: You can use any baking oil in place of applesauce. Try avocado oil or coconut oil is one of my faves too.

  • Maple syrup: Maple syrup can be substituted with molasses or honey. You may need more or less depending on the brand used, so give it a little taste test as you go.
