Your new favorite holiday cookies

Cookies are my all time favorite holiday treat to make for myself, my roomates, and my family. Cookies are the perfect treat to satisfy any sweet craving at any time or any point of the day. Need a breakfast dessert? Let me help you! Need a lunch dessert? I’ve got so many amazing cookie recipes… and this one has got to be a favorite (just don’t tell my other cookies.)

As soon as November hit, I knew I had to start holiday baking right away. I wanted to share as many holiday recipes during the season as I possibly could because we all need something sweet in our lives right now. So, I pulled out all things holiday, including my jar of crushed peppermint, and got to work!

After just a few short hours in the kitchen, this amazing Chocolate Peppermint Cookie recipe was born. These cookies are full of the perfect chocolate fudgy flavor and topped with even more melted chocolate and all the crushed peppermint your heart desires. My entire apartment smelled like sweet chocolate and the holidays when I baked this recipe the first time and I can’t wait for y’all to experience it.

Healthy Chocolate Peppermint Cookies consist of two sets of ingredients: the cookies recipe and the topping! Each set of ingredients contains ingredients that are fully gluten free and dairy free and can be easily made vegan by the use of maple syrup rather than honey. Here’s what you need:

  • Coconut Flour
  • Cocoa Powder

  • Applesauce
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Honey

Kitchen tools needed to make chocolate peppermint cookies

You only need a few kitchen items to start baking these cookies! I love how simple this recipe is in both ingredients and kitchen tools. Little fuss and little mess is all I can ask for when I step foot in the kitchen.

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Stirring Utensil
  • Cookie Scoop
  • Small Microwave Safe Bowl

You will also need a few measuring cups to get baking: 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, and 1 cup.

How to make chocolate cookies

To begin, preheat your oven to 350F and place a sheet of parchment paper on top of your baking sheet.

In a large bowl, mix your wet ingredients: almond butter, applesauce, honey, and vanilla. Mix well and be sure to break apart any clumps.

Once smooth, add in the dry ingredients: coconut sugar, almond flour, coconut flour, cocoa powder, sea salt, and baking soda. Mix super well to create your cookie batter. You can definitely mix these in a separate bowl first, but I have found that this method works just as good!

Once your batter looks even, use your cookie scoop and measure out even amounts of cookie dough onto your baking sheet. I was able to make 9 large cookies, but you can make 12 smaller ones as well. Leave a little room between each cookie and flatten gently to create the perfect cookie shape.

Bake for about 20 minutes and then let cool!

While your cookies are cooling, melt the chocolate in your microwave safe bowl and prepare your crushed peppermint. Dip the tops of each cookie into the chocolate and then sprinkle each cookie with peppermint. I then drizzled my leftover chocolate on top, but that’s optional 🙂

Enjoy along with a hot cup of coffee!

The most delicious gluten free cookies

I have been gluten free for a few years now and have found so many ways to enjoy this way of life. When I first had to cut out gluten to help my digestion, I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the same holiday sweets I once could. After falling in love with baking, I knew I had to share gluten free and dairy free recipes to help other gluten free people like myself!

If you know someone that has to stay away from gluten for any reason, share these cookies with them! These chocolate peppermint cookies are not only gluten free, but are suitable for people with other allergies as well. These cookies won’t let you down.

A healthier recipe for cookies

In this recipe you will find a number of healthier baking ingredients. All of these were chosen to keep this recipe gluten free and dairy free along with providing extra nutrients when possible.

Applesauce

I love to use applesauce in place of other baking oils. Applesauce has better nutritional content than vegetable or canola oil and works really well with almost all my recipes. Applesauce also adds another touch of sweetness to these cookies.

Honey

When it comes to adding just a touch of sweetness to my recipes, I love using honey or maple syrup. For this recipe, I opted for honey. I find that using either of these two sweeteners is a great way to achieve a sweet flavor in baking without having to use a lot of white sugar.

Almond Flour

My go-to gluten free baking flour. It’s a healthier alternative to all-purpose flour and keeps this recipe gluten free!

Other cookie recipes to try
